What Generative Engine Optimization Actually Means (And What It Doesn't)
GEO isn't a new algorithm to game — it's a shift in how content earns citations from AI answers. Here's what actually changes and what doesn't.
“Generative engine optimization” gets thrown around like it’s a replacement for SEO. It isn’t. It’s a set of practices for getting cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot — and it sits on top of the same fundamentals that have always mattered: crawlable pages, clear writing, and content that demonstrates real expertise. If someone is selling you a “GEO strategy” that has nothing to do with your existing SEO work, be skeptical.
Here’s what’s genuinely different, and what’s just SEO wearing a new hat.
What actually changed
Traditional search returns a ranked list of links. You compete for position 1 through 10. Generative engines synthesize an answer from multiple sources and cite (or paraphrase) a handful of them. That changes the unit of competition. You’re no longer fighting for a slot on a results page — you’re fighting to be one of the three or four sources an LLM decides to pull a specific claim from.
This has a few concrete implications:
- Passages matter more than pages. LLMs extract specific chunks of text — a definition, a stat, a step in a process — not the wholeness of your page. A page can rank poorly for its primary keyword and still get quoted for one clean paragraph buried in it.
- Attribution is inconsistent. Sometimes you get a named citation. Often you don’t, and the model just absorbs your phrasing into a summary with no link back. There’s no dashboard for this yet worth trusting completely — most GEO “visibility scores” on the market are directionally useful at best.
- Retrieval sources vary by engine. Perplexity and Bing-backed tools lean heavily on live web crawling. Google’s AI Overviews draw from its own index and knowledge graph. ChatGPT’s browsing behavior differs again. Optimizing for one doesn’t guarantee coverage across all of them.
- Freshness and specificity outrank generic authority. A concise, well-sourced answer to a narrow question often beats a comprehensive pillar page, because the model is looking for an extractable fact, not a whole essay to summarize.
What hasn’t changed
This is the part most “GEO agencies” gloss over because it’s less exciting to sell:
Technical crawlability is still the gate. If your pages are blocked by robots.txt, load content via client-side JavaScript the crawler can’t render, or return slow, error-prone responses, none of this matters. AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) need the same clean access your organic crawler needs.
E-E-A-T still governs what gets trusted. Generative engines are, if anything, more sensitive to signals of genuine expertise, because they’re trying to avoid citing something that turns out to be wrong. Clear authorship, accurate claims, and a site with a track record of being right are still the foundation.
Structured data still helps machines parse your content. Schema markup doesn’t guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity about what a page is, who wrote it, and what it’s claiming — which is exactly the kind of clarity retrieval systems reward.
Links still function as trust signals. Being cited elsewhere, referenced by other credible sites, or mentioned in the kind of press that builds real-world authority — none of that stopped mattering. If anything, third-party validation is one of the few durable proxies these models have for “is this source reliable.”
What GEO practice actually looks like
In practice, adapting for generative engines means:
- Structuring content so individual sections answer one specific question cleanly, with the claim stated plainly before the elaboration — not buried three paragraphs into throat-clearing.
- Including precise, checkable facts (numbers, dates, named sources) rather than vague generalizations, since those are what get lifted into summaries.
- Keeping technical crawl access open to AI-specific bots, distinct from your regular SEO crawl settings.
- Monitoring brand and content mentions across AI outputs the same way you’d monitor rankings — imperfectly, but consistently, and treating any tool’s score as directional rather than gospel.
- Not abandoning the rest of your SEO program to chase this. The pages that get cited by AI overviews are, overwhelmingly, pages that were already doing well in traditional search.
The honest summary: GEO is a new distribution channel for the same quality signals search has rewarded for years, layered with a few extraction-specific tactics. Anyone promising to “optimize you for ChatGPT” independent of your actual site quality is selling something. If your technical foundation and content substance are already solid, a GEO audit is the right next step to find where you’re losing citations you should already be winning.
